From September 27th to the 29th, Sarum Swords club coaches John and Phoebe had the great pleasure to attend an International coaching seminar run by Great Britain Olympic coach, Ziemek Wojciechowski. The course demonstrations were performed by four times Olympian and former World #1, Richard Kruse. This was a fantastic learning experience. Thank you also to Carl, Joe and Kunle for accompanying us as our hard working pupils.
Well done to our fantastic young Sarum Swords under 14 team (Adam, Ella and Matthew), who came 2nd out of 10 teams this weekend. They were victorious in all three of their group stage matches against Romsey, Escrime and Espada fencing club. In an exciting semi final, they edged out the Winchester Escrime ‘A’ team. In the final they pushed the Espada ‘A’ team close, but although they narrowly lost in the final, they should all be really proud of their excellent fencing.
Congratulations to Matthew who fenced brilliantly to finish in 12th place at the England Youth Championships. Matthew won four group stage matches and his first two elimination bouts, before going out to the top seeded fencer. Great work! Well done also to Ella won two group stage matches and her first elimination to make the last 32 and Adam who also won two group stage matches. I’m really proud of all the fencers who represented us this year!
Well done to our two fencers who competed in the IAPS fencing championships at Millfield school this weekend. Adam fenced really well to make the quarter final in the under 13 boys foil and Ella-Marie won the Bronze medal in the under 11 girls foil. Both fencers really took on board all the advice they were given and have shown great improvement in their fencing.
Well done to all our fencers who took part in the British Youth Championships at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Great fencing by Carl (23rd under 16 boys), Kunle (45th under 14 boys) and Ella (28th under 12 girls). Lots of valuable experience gained.
We are pleased to announce that from April 2019 our new venue will be Dennis Marsh House, there is free parking on site in our car park and also parking nearby in Waitrose carpark which is free for 3 hours and only a short 5 minutes walk away from the venue.
Congratulations to Davis who fenced brilliantly to finish 32nd out of 275 boys at the Challenge Wratislavia in Wroclaw, Poland. The Challenge Wratislavia is a well organised international fencing tournament with a great tradition, which this year attracted fencers from 23 different Nations.
In the poule, Davis had to quickly get used to fencing to only four hits in shorter two minute matches. His first elimination match was against a strong Hungarian fencer, which he won narrowly 8-7. His second elimination opponent was from Romania. Davis fenced very strongly to defeat him 12-5. Davis then was up against the number 16 seeded fencer from the Czech Republic. Davis initially trailed 8-11, but he held his nerve, scoring three hits in a row to take it to priority, before scoring the winning hit. Davis was defeated in the last 32, 10-4 by the eventual silver medalist, but had a terrific days fencing.
Well done also, to Truman, who in his first international won two poule matches. Great fencing!
